Rather than turning the other cheek, some churches are turning to martial arts to attract youth into their congregations.

Blessed be the Lord my rock
Who trains my hands for war
And my fingers for battle

– Psalm 144:1

Story Synopsis

Boxing has long been used by boys clubs, police athletic leagues (PAL), and ministries as a way of teaching young boys discipline, rules, and building confidence. Today, with boxing on the slide, churches are turning to martial arts to attract young people, particularly males into the church.

Some churches are offering martial arts training as an outreach program to attract the same market as mixed martial arts big leaguers UFC and Strikeforce, but for markedly different reasons. The 18 – 30 year old market is a lucrative one for any entertainment business including the mma big boys. Attracting a large following in that market attracts big advertising and pay per view dollars. Religious organizations however, see the martial arts as a vehicle to teach impressionable young minds about the importance of discipline, conviction, and introduce them them to the church.

Facts

● Some churches have taken a controversial move to create mma fighting teams, sell tickets to pay per view events, and host their own events.

● Proponents say the sport attracts young men who may otherwise not discover what the church has to offer.

● Opponents say churches are exploiting a violent sport to target specific groups for the wrong reasons.

Quotes
From John Graden, Executive Director, The Martial Arts Teachers’ Association

“The martial arts have always been steeped in traditions of respect, humbleness, self-control and other important qualities that mirror Christian faith. For some, the missing part of the puzzle is a relationship with God, and this strategy is a good one to complete the puzzle for those who choose to participate. We feel this is an excellent application of the appeal and benefits of the martial arts for young people. – John Graden, Executive Director, The Martial Arts Teachers’ Association
